Description
History: The Yellow Creek Heritage Hinds Walnut Tree started it's growth approximately in 1767, 9 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence of 1776 The once majestic Hinds Walnut tree, one of more than 50 such heritage trees in the state, collapsed Saturday morning across Oregon Highway 138 near Yellow Creek Road about 12 miles northwest of Sutherlin in November 2017. This tree is notable for its size, age and that it is not native to Oregon. Its location was a probable Indian camping and fishing ground where migrating salmon were abundant and accessible. It predates the arrival of settlers and may have sprouted from a cast-off nut. It was located 12 miles northwest of present day Sutherlin, OR on State Highway 138 (milepost 12.36) adjacent to the southwest corner of Yellow Creek bridge. Height: 103' Diameter: 7' Circumference: 20' Crown Spread: 110' Approximate Age: 250+ years old. Started it's growth in 1747 Dedicated as Heritage Tree: April 11, 1997 SPRING SALE ...
