Big, DRY female pistachio — 12” x 12” x 5”, 16 lb, 8% moisture content. If you’ve turned pistachio before, you know the problem: the blanks are always small, and they’re always green. This one is neither. It came off a California orchard tree planted in the early 1970s, saved from the burn pile when the orchard came out in 2021, and air-dried five years in the central Arizona desert. Meter reads 8%. It’s done moving — turn it once, finish it, and don’t wait a year to find out what it does. The shape It’s a half-moon / crescent section of the trunk — hollowed on one side by the tree itself, so one face is a sun-weathered natural curve and the other is fresh-cut end grain. That’s not a defect, it’s the design. Mount it hollow-side up and you’ve got a natural-edge winged bowl or platter in the 10” range with the color running right through the wings. Or cut the thick lobe out for a 5–6” deep bowl and turn the rest into lidded boxes, a pepper mill, bottle stoppers, or a handful of pen blan...
